Buzzy Bees – Reception class news – 11th May 2012

We are learning about life cycles in class. If possible, please send in a picture of your child as a baby for our display, thank you.

We will be hatching eggs after half term. If you would like to give a chick a home please speak to us. We hope to successfully hatch 5.

Literacy

We have been reading a variety of non– fiction books to find out lots of information about the animals at Colchester Zoo.

We have been reading about the life cycle of a butterfly and have written sentences about each stage. We are expecting a delivery of our very own caterpillars next week!

We have also been discussing camouflage and how animals use it to their advantage.

Sounds Focus

The children have had great fun using our magic e wands in class. We say the magic words ‘magic e, magic e, tell me what I see’ altogether to see what happens to the short vowel. We now know that it changes the short vowel sound into a long vowel sound.

Try searching for words with the magic e at the end of the word in books at home.

Numeracy

We are beginning to talk about tens and units and have been counting in tens all the way up to 100.

We have continued to add two groups together and have discussed the what the equals sign.

Percy’s New Home

Well done children, Percy has chosen you to take him home because you have tried your best!

Jemimah 27/04/12

Fraser 5/05/12

Mr Jones will give out 2 Head teacher’s awards Monday 14th May.

Upcoming Events

Please tell friends and family about our upcoming open mornings. They are very welcome to visit if they are interested in joining us at FKS.

Don’t forget to purchase a ticket and raffle tickets for the Barn Dance

Saturday 26th May.

Creative

We have worked on large scale paintings and collages for our ‘Rumble in Jungle’ display. The children have thought carefully about mixing coulors to create similar pictures to those in the actual story book. The children have also made sure that their collages using patterned paper matches their chosen animal. We have had some beautifully created patterned snakes this week.

The children are keen to share their animal themed cakes with you tonight.

We used continued to create bar charts by counting the animals on a tropical island. The children are learning how the height of the bar gives us the information we need.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Watts

Year 4 – stories

During the last week of April I was lucky enough to spend a little extra time with Year 4. I enjoyed the chance to read the class quite a bit of a favourite Lynne Reid Banks  book I, Houdini: The Autobiography of a Self-Educated Hamster (Here’s a review I found in case you’d like to know more).  I really enjoyed reading it…some years ago! (I also loved her book The Indian in the Cupboard.)

At the beginning of the week I had an idea for some story writing in the English lessons I was involved in. I recommended that the story openings were dramatic enough  to catch their readers’ attention, and I wasn’t disappointed.  I can recall a number of story openings, some are truly brilliant, none start ‘Once there was a…’

An example of an opening that captured my son’s imagination this year was in Louis Sacher‘s 1998 book  Holes. I recommend the book whole heartedly – upper juniors are you reading this? hope so – but if you want a taster then here is a link to the first few pages. My esteemed proff proof reading colleague Miss Bircher recommends the works of Philip Ardagh (http://www.philipardagh.com/) as another excellent author.

Last week I sent home a first draft of the stories (draft as I forgot to include one of the stories, otherwise I’d have called it finished!)

Here is a link to the stories collected together.  I hope you enjoy :)

Forest Schools update (12/3/12)

This week we rushed down to the wood clutching the detailed plans we had previously made for our dens. The children split into groups and started phase one of the den construction process: finding a base, gathering materials and (in some cases) barricading the entrance to keep out intruders! Looking great so far and to be continued next week.

First signs of Spring: In the woods we found patches of violets and more primroses, which have opened fully this week.
On the walk across the field we spotted a hovering Kestrel and a couple of the remaining long and short-eared Siberian owls that we have been watching each week.
We are looking forward to completing and playing in our dens over the next couple of weeks.

FKS U11 B football team vs. Holmwood House

On Wednesday 14th March the U11 B team played Holmwood House. We got off to a good start with a 4 – 1 lead at half time with two goals from Archie and two from me. In the second half David scored one goal which then made it 5 – 1. About ten seconds before full time Homewood House scored one more goal. The final score was a 5 -2 win. A special mention to Archie for some great goals and crosses and Vishal for some great defending. A special thanks to Mr Davidson for organising the match.

World Book Day / Tell me a story!

Reading, writing and telling stories have inspired many of us recently. It was good to celebrate literacy and World Book Day and to be excited about words! Seeing everyone dress up as a book character was fantastic and there were lots of really imaginative costumes. The author John Harris came, told stories and wowed us with his enthusiasm for story telling. Children in Reception enjoyed their story of a magic porridge pot, other children had tales of a scary granny looking for yellow socks! Children have described their enjoyment of reading, as one Year six pupil said you can “Travel the world from an armchair!” Hearing that made me smile and later that day I was transported to the other side of the world as I read my book (on my sofa). Knowing that stories have a beginning a middle and an end has been a recent focus in Reception class. I think that with their work on dinosaurs the children in Miss Barlow’s class might tell and write some amazing accounts of life as it might have been millions of years ago. I know older children become expert at building up suspense and drama in their stories, writing a good ‘resolution’ and maybe adding a ‘twist in the tale’ — something to keep you thinking about a story for ages after…

U10 boys football team in the Brentwood school tournament – 09/03/12

The u10 boys football team played on Friday at the Brentwood school football tournament. The competition was very tough with 18 other schools entering. The boys played very well throughout the day not conceeding a single goal. Unfortunately we found it more difficult finding the net, and two drawn games prevented us from reaching the final. The team played some excellent football but were disappointed not to reach the final.

U9 Hockey – Felsted school tournament – 08/03/12

U9 winners!  Congratulations to the U9 girls who played in the Felsted hockey tournament on Thursday 8 March.  Despite a nervous start for some of the team as they were playing in their first games, the girls won their first two games convincingly against Felsted B and Alleyn Court, 3-0, but lost 3-2 to Barnadiston.  They nonetheless went through as 2nd in their pool and beat Kingshott 2-0.  This put them in the final, once again against Barnadiston, this time beating them 4-0!  Well done to all the girls who really rose to the occasion and to their captain, Clemmie, who as always gave an exceptional performance.  Thank you to all the parents for their great support.

Mrs Marler

The boys u9 team participated in the Felsted tournament this week.
They finished 4th overall but only conceded 2 goals in the four matches. The boys played extremely well and I was really pleased with the progress they made through the day. Their final position was not a fair reflection of their effort in my opinion.

U11 and U10 Netball vs. Whitecourt Primary School (home, 07/03/12)

Despite the rain, the U11 Netball ‘A’ team played their fourth league game on Wednesday 7 March against Whitecourt Primary School at home.  The team played well but despite some good efforts by Eloise, Zach and Grace, Whitecourt’s attack proved too strong with the final result 8-1.
After the ‘A’ team, the U10 girls played Whitecourt’s ‘B’ team, also losing 8-1.  Some good experience was gained and some lovely centre court play was given by Emily, Lottie and Jess.

The life of Joseph

In RE this week the children created their own Dreamcoats based on the story of Jacob giving his son Joseph a colourful robe to show his affection and love towards his son.
The children used card and tissue paper to create quite colourful designs.  It is also a good sign when you hear “This is the best RE class I’ve ever had!”  We hope to use these coats in a display once we’ve learned more about Joseph and the life he had after he was sold as a slave………….

Esau & Jacob and the Very Expensive Bowl of Soup

In RE the Year 5s were making their own “very expensive” bowl while listening to the story of how Jacob tricked his brother Esau into giving him his birthright for a bowl of soup.  Not a wise thing to do in the spur of the moment without thinking it through.  We realised that we really should think things through before making a rash decision, especially when looking towards what may happen in the future.

On Friday 2 March the U11 netball ‘A’ team played against St Francis at home and despite some great performances against tough opposition lost 11-6.  Congratulations to Year 5 who played and won against St Francis’ ‘B’ team.
All girls in Year 3 and 4 played against Felsted Preparatory School’s Year 4 ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams on Thursday 1 March.  The ‘A’ team secured a convincing win against Felsted ‘B’ winning 11-3 and the ‘B’ team had a close fought game, losing 2-3 against Felsted ‘C’.  Most of the ‘B’s were playing in their first game so really well done; special mention should be given to Lucy, Carmen and Isabel who played determinedly throughout.  Thanks Miss Burcher for your help and umpiring.

In the last twenty-four hours we have learnt…

Yesterday I asked a few year six pupils if they could tell me something they had learnt in the last twenty-four hours…

Toluwani told me that a mathematician called Goldbach discovered that every even number after four can be made up as a sum of two prime numbers. This is called the ‘Goldbach Conjecture‘. Toluwani learnt this when he had finished his other work in the maths lesson. He showed me where he read this in his maths text book.

Rory told me he’s found out that John Harris is visiting the school (02/03/12) for World Book Day (01/03/12). Rory found this out through the school newsletter. Out of John’s books Rory enjoyed ‘The Pearl in the Grass’ the most, because the storyline was more complicated than in the other books.

Billy has learnt that Terry Pratchet has Alzheimer’s disease, Billy’s brother told him this. Billy thinks Terry’s books are “..funny, some of the characters are a bit odd and it can be a bit hard to keep track of the plot.” (they sound great!)
Billy tells me that Terry Pratchet has written eighty three books in the Discworld series. Billy has read three of them. He described to me the basic idea (turtle, in space, three worlds on his back…) Billy has inspired me here, I think that recent ICT lessons using the program Kodu  could could allow us to make a discworld type world. Stories (sci-fi anyone?) as well as programming could come out of Kodu… (exciting..watch this space!)

Sam saw his cousin’s pet rat shaking. Apparently (Sam’s Auntie says) that towards the end of a rat’s two-to-five year life their hair goes grey, their eyesight deteriorates and they shake a lot. So, Sam has learnt some unusual facts about rodents. Sam doesn’t like rats especially the ones who try to eat his chickens’ legs.

Alex has learnt that worms are hermaphrodites . Which means that worms (like snails for example) have both male and female reproductive organs. Alex learnt this from Billy. Alex said “Billy told me this when I entered the playground” (Billy tells us he reads non-fiction books whilst brushing his teeth in the morning and apparently often has a new fact in the playground). Alex already knew that worms are useful as they fertilise the soil and bring oxygen into the ground.

I have learnt (from Brian Cox’s Wonders of the Universe and subsequently I googled to find out a little more) that all the gold on Earth comes from dying stars. After a few million years of generating energy stars run out of fuel and explode in what is called a Supernova. Supernova’s scatter “the neutron-rich heavy element gold throughout the galaxy” (here’s another webpage with more information). I love learning about space, it sometimes makes me feel  like my head will explode :) I experienced this when (I was about 10 I think) my aunt gave me a book called ‘The cosmic mind boggling book’.

I love learning new things. I also enjoy practising something to get better at it. I love learning how to do things which are not useful at all. I like learning something I think will be useful one day (how to light a fire without matches, how to do long multiplication without having to do long multiplication). I get loads of satisfaction learning a new skill so I’m able to do something easily which was complicated before. You?

Year 5 Literacy

At the beginning of the lesson Grace came up with the idea of writing a quick poem to celebrate our love of Pancake Day!  (Wikipedia entry on Shrove Tuesday) This took us just 5 minutes to write as a class:

Pancakes
Tasty pancakes!
Yummy, sugary-sweet, divine.
As golden and round as the sun.
I want to eat them now!
Scrumptious, pleasurable, sugar rush.
Dripping in gorgeous syrupiness.
Tasty pancakes!

Our Mission to the Moon

The Children in Reception had a fantastic afternoon making a ‘space backpack’ with their parents on Friday 27th January 2012. Thank you to Mrs Roycroft for the original design and for contributing many of her own art resourses. This was not only an afternoon for the children to explore their creativity but also to develop problem solving skills. The children were asked to identify different shapes to use for the controls and buttons on their backpack. They also investigated ways to secure the bottles, tubing and paper rolls together. Mrs Butterley and I are very pleased with the results and that each backpack reflects how unique each child is. They made their own choices and developed their own designs

PA Christmas Fayre 2011

The Christmas Fayre held on Friday 25th November was a great success with something of interest for children and adults of all ages. The Fayre was hosted by the Parents’ Association who were supported by many stall holders selling a wide range of items including jewellery, clothing, home gifts, gift cards, soaps, cosmetics, toys, books, flowers and sweets!

The PA is most grateful to all parents who supplied a multitude of mouthwatering offerings for our home produce stall; a fantastic array of home baking skills were on display!

The Year 6 pupils must also be commended on hosting a number of stalls including Tombola, Lolly Stick Treasure Hunt, Bagatelle, “How many sweets in the jar?”, Buzz game, Ping Pong Lucky Dip and of course prepared and sold the essential reindeer food for the all important stop offs for Father Christmas and his sleigh this year. Let’s hope the reindeer don’t overindulge and are able to continue to fly throughout the night! Special thanks to Mrs Stanwyck for coordinating events.

Our visitors gladly received complimentary festive refreshments including mulled wine, mince pies, teas and coffees during the shopping extravaganza. A bonus treat was the opportunity to buy a freshly made vegetarian Indian meal for that evening!

A big thank you to all parents, pupils, staff and friends of the school who contributed towards the success of the day.

U11 Netball team in the 2011 New Hall netball rally

On 25th November the Under 11 Netball team went to the New Hall netball rally. First we played Ursaline they were a very strong team and unfortunately we lost 11- 1. We were then supposed to play Danbury Park but they did not arrive. Our 2nd match was against Maldon Court. It was a very good game but we lost 5-1. We then played St Cedds we lost again 1 – 0. Alleyn Court was our next match. They had a team which was hard to beleive were year 6′s – we lost 5-2. Our last match in this section was against Elm Green, from past experience we knew this was a good team – we lost 14-1.  After a short break we found that we might win the Cup if we won the next 2 matches. The pressure was on. We played St Annes, at the end of 12 mins we were drawing 4 all. We had 2 mins extra play and the 1st team to get a goal would win. Leticia was the first to score – we were in the final for the Cup !!!  In the last match we were against Maldon Court again. Putting past thoughts behind us we all put on a final burst of energy. We were 2-1 up then both teams scored a goal 3-2 to us. We had won the Cupp.

All of the team want to say a big thank you to Miss Burcher and to Mrs Marlar for organising and coaching us. We thank the umpires for umpiring.

The junior competition was for years 2, 3 and 4, the senior competition was for years 4, 5 and 6. After some close games in a really competitive tournament Keats beat Shelley 2 – 0 in the senior football competition final. In the junior football competition the winners were Keats (7 points) with Shelley (6 points) in second place followed by Milton and Byron in third and forth respectively.

In the netball tournament the junior competition was won by Milton with Keats in second place, Byron in third and Shelley in forth. Children in year 2 enjoyed the afternoon, competed very well and were great assets to their houses. In the senior competition Milton were first, Shelley second, Byron third and Keats forth. Well played all who took part.

October netball reports

The Year 4 netball team played a great game against New Hallon Wednesday 12 October winning 5-0.  Well done to Saffron in Year 3 for scoring 3 of the goals in her first match.
Well done to the Year 6 team for finishing 10th out of 25 teams in the Forest Netball Tournament on Friday 14 October at Redbridge.  A great effort was made by the whole team, but special mention must be given to Zach (Year 4) for his outstanding contribution throughout as Goal Defence.
Mrs Marler
p.s. has anyone any photos they could email to me of the events? One or two are all I need and then I’ll add them to this post :) thank you, Mr Sheppard d.sheppard ‘at’ fksschools.co.uk

Gingerbread man hunt!

In reception our grandparents came to visit us at school. We took them outside to look for the gingerbread man. They helped us to draw maps to find him. It was lots of fun. See if you can find him when you next visit the shops.
