We are learning about life cycles in class. If possible, please send in a picture of your child as a baby for our display, thank you.

We will be hatching eggs after half term. If you would like to give a chick a home please speak to us. We hope to successfully hatch 5.

Literacy

We have been reading a variety of non– fiction books to find out lots of information about the animals at Colchester Zoo.

We have been reading about the life cycle of a butterfly and have written sentences about each stage. We are expecting a delivery of our very own caterpillars next week!

We have also been discussing camouflage and how animals use it to their advantage.

Sounds Focus

The children have had great fun using our magic e wands in class. We say the magic words ‘magic e, magic e, tell me what I see’ altogether to see what happens to the short vowel. We now know that it changes the short vowel sound into a long vowel sound.

Try searching for words with the magic e at the end of the word in books at home.

Numeracy

We are beginning to talk about tens and units and have been counting in tens all the way up to 100.

We have continued to add two groups together and have discussed the what the equals sign.

Percy’s New Home

Well done children, Percy has chosen you to take him home because you have tried your best!

Jemimah 27/04/12

Fraser 5/05/12

Mr Jones will give out 2 Head teacher’s awards Monday 14th May.

Upcoming Events

Please tell friends and family about our upcoming open mornings. They are very welcome to visit if they are interested in joining us at FKS.

Don’t forget to purchase a ticket and raffle tickets for the Barn Dance

Saturday 26th May.

Creative

We have worked on large scale paintings and collages for our ‘Rumble in Jungle’ display. The children have thought carefully about mixing coulors to create similar pictures to those in the actual story book. The children have also made sure that their collages using patterned paper matches their chosen animal. We have had some beautifully created patterned snakes this week.

The children are keen to share their animal themed cakes with you tonight.

We used continued to create bar charts by counting the animals on a tropical island. The children are learning how the height of the bar gives us the information we need.

Have a lovely weekend!

During the last week of April I was lucky enough to spend a little extra time with Year 4. I enjoyed the chance to read the class quite a bit of a favourite Lynne Reid Banks book I, Houdini: The Autobiography of a Self-Educated Hamster (Here’s a review I found in case you’d like to know more). I really enjoyed reading it…some years ago! (I also loved her book The Indian in the Cupboard.)

At the beginning of the week I had an idea for some story writing in the English lessons I was involved in. I recommended that the story openings were dramatic enough to catch their readers’ attention, and I wasn’t disappointed. I can recall a number of story openings, some are truly brilliant, none start ‘Once there was a…’

An example of an opening that captured my son’s imagination this year was in Louis Sacher‘s 1998 book Holes. I recommend the book whole heartedly – upper juniors are you reading this? hope so – but if you want a taster then here is a link to the first few pages. My esteemed <del>proff</del> proof reading colleague Miss Bircher recommends the works of Philip Ardagh (http://www.philipardagh.com/) as another excellent author.

Last week I sent home a first draft of the stories (draft as I forgot to include one of the stories, otherwise I’d have called it finished!)

Here is a link to the stories collected together. I hope you enjoy

The u11 boys football team continued their success on Wednesday. The team didn’t lose a game or concede a goal in any of their games.
They finished joint winners with Bocking school, who on goal difference had one goal more so were awarded the trophy. The team didn’t leave empty handed as they were awarded the league shield for winning all of their games.
The team play Lyons hall after Easter in the semi finals of the league competition. Well done to all the boys a really great achievement.

This week we rushed down to the wood clutching the detailed plans we had previously made for our dens. The children split into groups and started phase one of the den construction process: finding a base, gathering materials and (in some cases) barricading the entrance to keep out intruders! Looking great so far and to be continued next week.

First signs of Spring: In the woods we found patches of violets and more primroses, which have opened fully this week.
On the walk across the field we spotted a hovering Kestrel and a couple of the remaining long and short-eared Siberian owls that we have been watching each week.
We are looking forward to completing and playing in our dens over the next couple of weeks.

We got off to a good start with a 4 – 1 lead at half time with two goals from Archie and two from me. In the second half David scored one goal which then made it 5 – 1. About ten seconds before full time Homewood House scored one more goal. The final score was a 5 -2 win. A special mention to Archie for some great goals and crosses and Vishal for some great defending. A special thanks to Mr Davidson for organising the match.

Reading, writing and telling stories have inspired many of us recently. It was good to celebrate literacy and World Book Day and to be excited about words! Seeing everyone dress up as a book character was fantastic and there were lots of really imaginative costumes. The author John Harris came, told stories and wowed us with his enthusiasm for story telling. Children in Reception enjoyed their story of a magic porridge pot, other children had tales of a scary granny looking for yellow socks! Children have described their enjoyment of reading, as one Year six pupil said you can “Travel the world from an armchair!” Hearing that made me smile and later that day I was transported to the other side of the world as I read my book (on my sofa). Knowing that stories have a beginning a middle and an end has been a recent focus in Reception class. I think that with their work on dinosaurs the children in Miss Barlow’s class might tell and write some amazing accounts of life as it might have been millions of years ago. I know older children become expert at building up suspense and drama in their stories, writing a good ‘resolution’ and maybe adding a ‘twist in the tale’ — something to keep you thinking about a story for ages after…

The u10 boys football team played on Friday at the Brentwood school football tournament. The competition was very tough with 18 other schools entering. The boys played very well throughout the day not conceeding a single goal. Unfortunately we found it more difficult finding the net, and two drawn games prevented us from reaching the final. The team played some excellent football but were disappointed not to reach the final.
